Colonoscopy is an examination of the inside of the rectum and entire colon using a colonoscope to detect symptoms of many diseases such as colon cancer, bleeding, abdominal pain, colon blockage, constipation and irritable bowel. Colonoscopy is exercised by a colonoscopy specialist to evaluate the inside of the colon with a four foot long, flexible tube called colonoscope, a camera and a source of light at its tip. During the examination, the tube is inserted into the anus of the patient, and then advanced into the rectum and colon.

WHY DO YOU NEED A COLONOSCOPY?

A colonoscopy can be used to detect cancer of the colon or colon polyps. In addition, a colonoscopy may be recommended to diagnose and treat colon and rectum diseases such as:

Colonoscopy: It is a procedure that involves insertion of a colonoscope into the large intestine through the anus. The colonoscope contains a camera to transmit pictures of the inner portion of the colon to a video screen.
Virtual colonoscopy: A computerized tomography (CT) scans the large intestine using X-ray images. VC is not an actual endoscopy procedure does not need any colonoscope to insert into the large intestine.

COLONOSCOPY PROCEDURE:

  2. Medications are given to provide deep sedation and feel no pain,
  3. Laying of the patient in a position that suits the procedure,
  4. Insertion of colonoscope through the anus and up into the colon,
  5. Withdrawal of the colonoscope and taking photographs,
  6. Removal of colon polyps, if found any, and
  7. Sending tissue for analysis to determine if the polyp is cancerous.
