Breast biopsy is the procedure of surgical removal of breast cells and tissues from a lump or bump in the breast. The purpose of the breast biopsy is to find the presence of cancerous cells in the breast. The breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the whole world.

METHODS OF A BREAST BIOPSY:

FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION (FNA) BIOPSY:

In this type of biopsy, general physician uses a very fine needle and a syringe to extract fluid from a breast cell or clusters of cells from a solid lump. FNA is a percutaneous procedure.

CORE NEEDLE BIOPSY:

In this type of biopsy, samples of cancerous tissues are removed with a hollow “core” needle. The needle used in this biopsy is slightly larger than the needle used in FNA biopsy. It is a long procedure, but it is more reliable.

VACUUM ASSISTED BIOPSY:

To collect samples of cancerous cells, a small cut of less than ¼ inch long is made. Then, a hollow probe is inserted through the incision and guided to the abnormal mass using MRI, ultrasound or x-rays.

OPEN (SURGICAL) BIOPSY:

In this procedure, the breast is cut and the lump is taken out to examine under a microscope. The incision is between 1 to 2 inches.

DIRECT AND FRONTAL BIOPSY

With the surgical procedure of biopsy, patients may feel possible complications such as bruising and discomfort, prolonged bleeding and infection near the biopsy site. General physicians use two types of breast surgery procedures to remove cancerous cysts from the breast. After the removal of the lump, patients are kept under the observation of the doctor to monitor vital signs.
