Gallbladder surgery

Gallbladder surgery

The gallbladder is a tiny sac-shaped organ that is located just beneath the liver in the right upper part of the abdomen. It is a part of the digestive system and its function is to store bile – a chemical that helps in digestion of fats.

Symptoms of gallstones

The most common symptoms of gallstones are:

  • Indigestion
  • Nausea / vomiting
  • Pain in the upper abdomen, right side, back, shoulder or in between the shoulderblades

When do you need gallbladder surgery?

The digestive system can work properly even without a gallbladder, and after hysterectomy, removal of the gallbladder is the most common surgery performed in the US. Some conditions that require gallbladder surgery include:

  • Gallstones
  • Gallbladder infection.
  • Gallbladder dysfunction
  • Gallbladder polyps
  • Gallbladder cancer.

How to diagnose gallstones

The gallstones are primarily suspected by an experienced physician after a physical examination of the patient. To conrm the diagnosis, ultrasound and HIDA scan are preferred, and additionally, sometimes a CT scan as well.

PROCEDURE

The entire gallbladder is usually removed, not just the stones. There are two ways of performing the gallbladder surgery:

  •  Laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder – small cuts are made around the gallbladder and it is removed with the help of a laparoscope.
  • Open surgery – the skin is cut open with a large cut on the right abdomen to remove the gallbladder. It is very rare that we start the surgery using an open incision. Usually, we convert from laparoscopy, if we cannot see the gallbladder due to excessive scar tissue, or if the infection is so severe that we cannot safely identify structures around the gallbladder.
More than 95% of the cases are treated with laparoscopic surgery. Open surgery is very rare.

Post operative measures – after the surgery

After laparoscopic surgery, you will be carefully observed for at least 1-2 hours after laparoscopic surgery and will go home the same day. and you may go home on the same day. The incisions will be closed with dissolving sutures and you will have a follow up appointment in 2 weeks. You will be on a bland diet for 2-3 weeks following surgery, but ultimately will be able to resume your prior diet.
