Endoscopy (Egd)

Endoscopy (Egd)

What is endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a non-surgical method to examine the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The procedure is performed under sedation, and is similar to a colonoscopy, except that the scope is inserted through the mouth. We perform EGD to evaluate and diagnose of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum.

Common conditions diagnosed are

  • Esophagitis
  • reflux (GERD)
  • hiatal hernia
  • gastritis
  • peptic ulcer disease
  • gastric ulcer
  • duodenal ulcer
  • duodenitis
  • celiac disease

Additionally, biopsy of the tissue can be done to evaluate for the presence of Helicobacter pylori, a bacteria responsible for causing gastritis, ulcers, and linked with cancer of the stomach. Polyps in the stomach can also be removed during EGD. We can evaluate the size of hiatal hernia during EGD and if repair is planned, we obtain pressure measurements in preparation for surgery and are able to avoid a test normally done separately.
